People from all walks of life tell Voize about their favorite MJ songs, videos, moments.

*This article was published in Voize on July 7th, 2009**

In remembrance of Michael’s life and works, and in honor of his passing, Voize asked people from every corner of life, from celebrities to people on the street, these three questions:

What is your favourite MJ Song?

Thoughts/tribute about MJ

Favourite MJ music video or moment

Some even elected to write a short of message of tribute to the late King of Pop.Also check out our street interview videos and exclusive song downloads of Malaysian artistes remixing the King of Pop’s songs in our poptopus widget.

We’ll start this off with Voize’s own Managing Editor, Siva Chandran:

Favourite MJ Songs:
1. Man In The Mirror
2. Dont Stop Till You Get Enough

Favourite Music Video:
1. Smooth Criminal/ Stranger in Moscow

I have had the privilege of meeting MJ and speaking with him during his HIStory tour in Kuala Lumpur back in 1996. I spent two nights backstage watching in awe of the the amazing spectacle unfolding before my eyes – his signature moves, the electrifying atmosphere, the emotions that ran high amongst the 40,000 frenzied crowd each night and the awesome razzle-dazzle that only the King of Pop could have put together seamlessly on stage.

As part of the Youthquake/NST team, I selected the participants who performed on stage with Michael, and had the rare opportunity to work with MJ’s backstage crew and choreographers. It all seem like a distant memory now. But if there’s one thing that MJ has left behind for all of us, is the messages in his song.

Cleverly scripted into his pop and R&B gems were universal anthems that provoked deep thought and begged us to embrace in our lives. Songs like Earth Song, Black or White, Heal The World and We Are The World, no matter how cheesy it came off, bore lyrics that could heal and unite the people of all races in the world. And none greater than a song he didnt write, but became a vessel to deliver the message of change ..Man In The Mirror. As mankind races towards its destruction, its the one spiritual song that will seek to address the most potent force in the world..inner change. It all begins with us,and it ends with us.And if we cant see that in our own world of mirrors, we’re blind to the very world we create.

Siedah Garett’s astonishingly insightful lyrics puts it on par with Lenon’ s Imagine, and deserves to be carved into rock for generations to come. All it It needed was a voice to emanate the message on a global scale. Up steps Michael..and the world is forever changed. “if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself at make that change”. You will be missed dearly. There can only be ONE.

Julian Sherman Fernandez
Bassist, Lethal Doses

“I am a member of the band Lethal Doses and let me tell you that if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson, the amount of bands in the world today would have been significantly smaller, the amount of kids whose eyes light up once they pass a guitar store would have been smaller and musicians around the world would never push themselves to be better, because a fact hangs over all our heads and will continue to do so in many many years to come; we could never ever be as great as MJ.”

Top Favourite Michael Jackson songs and videos

1) Billie Jean
2) Thriller

Michael Jackson has inspired me to be guided by my own mind and not be swayed by others’ opinions that may lead me to nowhere.

Melissa Indot, Singer / Songwriter / Recording Artist

Favourite MJ songs:
1.Liberian Girl (so so moving, expressive & romantic)
2.Rock With You (cos it never fails to rock me)

Thoughts/tribute about MJ – “The epitome of how music, lyrics, groove and accessibility can be combined. Hits hits hit songs that sound so easily put together but require so much heart, soul and skill. Michael Jackson was a true master”

Favourite MJ music video or moment
The music video to ‘Thriller’. To me, watching it today, It does not look a day older from when it was premiered some 20 years ago (I think) – a masterpiece. It took music videos to a whole new level – made them even more tory-telling’ than before.

2 favourite songs : Human Nature and They don’t care about us

Favourite music video: Black or White

People always don’t appreciate what they have till it’s gone forever… only then they realise it’s true value and how precious it was….

Michael Jackson has been criticized, ridiculed and accused of many harsh information… People forget how much joy and changes he brought to people worldwide through his music, dance and charm. He was truly talented, a genius and one of a kind.

But he will live on….. from now as long as we remember him fondly with memories of his best years…. We love you Michael!!

I am amongst the millions depressed over his passing…….Losing him is truly saddening.

Tevan Manickam
Favourite MJ Songs:
1. Beat It
2. Man In The Mirror.

Favourite Music Video
Smooth Criminal

“It is still fresh in my mind, the day my brother started screaming Beat It! Beat It!. I was 3 years old at that time, not knowing the real meaning behind the word, I started screaming as well, becasue it just sounded cool at that time. Upon realising Beat It was a song by this dude who goes by the name of Micheal Jackson. I wondered what was the hype was all about. And it was only 3 days later when my brother was away for school I stole his cassette tape (YES IT WAS ALL CASSETTE at that time) and begin listening to this song. From the the first second to the last I was hooked, and at 2 minutes and 50 second I heard one of the most amazing solos ever. (didn’t knew that it was Van Halen at that time).

It was the begining of music mayhem for me, that song triggered a whole new for me. And confess that Beat It is the main reason why I am a music junkie today. The song thought me so many things, defeat and courage and how moving on. The memory will forever remain with me, this one song changed my life. I will never forget the day they finally showed the music video on TV, I was in awe It was so intense, that I thought the mother of all fight was about to break out, but upon seeing that video I understood a very important thing that violence is not the solution to all our problems.

As he did time and time again, Michael Jackson told us so many things through his music and united the world through unique on of a kind dance move. Although I failed miserably when I tried singing and dancing (not the forget the crotch grabbing move, he he) like him, I truly enjoyed his songs and videos. For almost 40 years he kept us smiling, I guess it’s time now for us the give back the smile to him. Let’s celebrate his music, his talent and creativity. As my close friend once said, “This is not a GOODBYE, but an eternal HELLO”.

Thank you for existing Micheal Jackson! You have definitely Changed the World! ”

Nicole-Ann Thomas

“It is extremely hard for me to choose my favourite 2 MJ songs, but since I have to, I would go with Man in the Mirror and Earth Song. As for videos, the King of Pop hit it right with Thriller and my other one would be Bad.

Having said that, everything he does, his voice, his revolutionary moves, strike a chord in me. He was a revelation when I first encountered him at the age of 8 or 9. Hence performing his music from school concerts to professional gigs. Today, he is still that revelation. He is still The One. Music will never be the same again. Goodbye Michael.

May you find peace now.”

My tribute goes like this.

“A beautiful man if ever there was one. God has taken him away from us just before his final curtain falls, but it only serves to strengthen his legend. Cliched as it sounds, Michael you are the reason I love music so much. There are probably not many other people who have made a more profound impact in trying to make this world a better place to live in. You have been a phenomenal inspiration in the lives of many, & I know you will continue to be even from up there. Michael, I will always remember you with love. RIP”

Shevani Ann Nall, Indie Artiste

Favorite MJ songs:

1) The Way You Make Me Feel
2) Earth Song

Favorite MJ video:

1) The Way You Make Me Feel

First Concert I had ever gone to was his, 4-5 yeard old, people standing on chairs and me on dad’s shoulders while he stood on the chair.

___________________

Gowri Ratnasingam (The New Straits Times)

“Somehow I seemed to think Michael would always be around. He was with us since a little boy and as we followed his creative journey as he grew up, giving us hit after hit, dancing with such energy decade after decade, the guy seemed superhuman in his boundless artistry.

About a decade ago, I remember my dad, a lover of Indian classical music and its well-trained singers, watched him perform on TV. He turned around with a smile and said, “This boy can really sing. See how he wraps his voice around the notes.”

His genius cannot be ignored — it’s just too obvious.

My fav vid would be Black or White. I love the kaleidoscope of cultures MJ portrayed and the way he choreographed his movements to complement the traditional dances. Also intriguing are the morphing of the faces and then wacky beginning.

My fave songs would be Man In The Mirror and You’re Not Alone.

Be it his upbeat songs or the tender ones, MJ showed he can take his vocals anyplace he wants to. And that’s getting rarer in musicians these days.”

DjayPee, award winning dance/electronica artiste

About Michael Jackson, I would say :

“For me, Michael Jackson is the artist with the most remarkable effects on the music industry:
- he was already famous when he was a kid,
- he created a unique style of dancing,
- he holds the record of the most sold album (“Thriller”, more than 50 million units) which will most probably never be surpassed,
- he is probably the first one to have made music video clips like real short films with a story,
- much of the music today has been inspired one way or another by his music,

My favorite of his songs is “Thriller”, maybe because of its unique bass line, of its dramatic instrumentation (which somewhat has inspired me to be dramatic in some of my tracks), of its appeal on the dance floor at that time, or of its unique video clip (the one with the zombies).

Louis Yap, student

Favorite MJ Song:

1) I’ll be There and They Don’t Really Care about Us

Michael Jackson is probably the Elvis of our generation, and rightfully so, for moonwalking his way into our hearts with no effort at all. My earliest memory of his voice was probably him singing Will You Be There in the movie Free Willy. Michael, if you’re reading this, rest assured that you’ll live on, in our memories!

Favorite MJ songs: Billie Jean and Rock With You.

Favourite “unpopular” song: ‘Girlfriend’ in Off The Wall.

Favorite MJ video moments:
a) the ’shivering’ man in ‘Beat It’
b) the ‘Beat It’ group dance steps. I’m still trying to perfect it today!

You need to listen to Ben and Never Can Say Goodbye to realise what an amazing voice he had even at a very tender age. To sing like that at that age……

Losing him is the greatest loss to mankind and dearly for me…. My heart now feels heavy as I write this tribute by the fact that he no longer exists in this world, BUT I still feel his music within my soul as I hum away with my dailies…

But I would have to settle for “Remember the Time” from DANGEROUS and “Butterflies” from INVINCIBLE. Michael Jackson had a genius and a heart that graces our world only once in several lifetimes.”

“Michael Jackson, the king of pop is perhaps one of the best inspiration for being active always , his music , singing style, dancing and his own fashion statement is one of its kind and nobody on this planet can ever become a Michael Jackson again. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness. We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, but we begin to remember every music you made for us. You were and will be the greatest entertainer of all time. May your soul rest in peace. ”

Say Say Say (With Paul McCartney)

“I didn’t know Elvis or John Lennon. I only knew one name; Michael Jackson. I was seven when I etched in front of the telly, when a young MJ strut his stuff for Beat It! I didn’t know who he was then neither did I know how to sing his song. But there was one thing I knew for certain; this was a man that I’m going to love all my life! Since, I had grown up with him or better still, he helped me grow up through his music. Each time he appears whether to sing or moonwalk; my stomach churns out butterflies, my heart skips a beat and my breath would come out in gasp!

This legend commanded the world at his feet!! MJ gave everything to the world and took nothing back in return. He was an angel to those in need, a friend to all who had none, an inspiration to young generation, a rare gift from God and a complete selfless entertainer. To sum him up … he was and will always be a supernova! Gentle, sensitive and yet lonely till his last days … MJ will forever be known as the Thriller who was Gone Too Soon. I will always love you MJ. Thank you for the impeccable songs and flawless dances. You will be immitated but will never be duplicated. R.I.P MJ.”

I was totally devastated when I heard the news that my greatest pop icon has passed away on 25 June 2009. Words could not express how shattered I was on that day. I have always admired Michael Jackson, the King of Pop for his loving, sweet, generous and caring ways. I am really going to miss him so much.

He touched so many lives with his music and his talent has left a lasting impression in this world. Though he is no longer around, he still lives on through his music.I grew up listening to his music and I loved him. He rocked this world. I really admire him.His song, Man in the Mirror has changed many lives. He showed that there was always a way and we did not need to hold back anything.

His other song, Heal the World has really inspired many as well. Though his heart had been battered on all fronts, but he believed in humanity and wanted to change the world. He authorized that tens of thousands be spent on preserving his charity organization Heal the World Foundation (HTWF).

Michael Jackson was one of the first artists to make significant contributions to social causes as well as a plentitude of financial contributions to various charities. He did it out of the unending generosity of his heart.
Michael Jackson, you’re the greatest entertainer and humanitarian. You will be sadly missed forever in this world. My heart goes out to his family. Rest in peace.

Rekha Menon

“ Michael Jackson to me was this star with an amazingly calm and down to earth demeanour. He always had a smile no matter how hurt he had been in his childhood and later on in his life. People began to look at music in a different light with his amazing songs, dance moves and music videos. It was a slap on the face for those who thought blacks don’t make way for a change. I only feel disappointed for one reason. To me music is love. And it’s sad that Michael wasted himself when he could have given so much of love to the world through his music. Nevertheless, I wish his soul rests in peace. “

However, this can only succeed if the right form of engagement has been put in place.” adds Jolene.

Platform for Youths to meet up with potential employers

THE MoneyTree Idea eXchange (MIX) – SOTA Challenge held recently saw seven teams battling it out for a chance to grab RM1,500.

The MIX teams were given 3.5 minutes to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges, by coming up with various business solutions for problems and challenges that were faced by the Standard Online Tourism Architecture (SOTA) platform (a consolidated tourism e-business platform that unites Government, travel businesses and Consumers) and suggest ways as to how those problems and challenges could be resolved.

During the Q & A session, the teams had five minutes to defend their business ideas against the scrutiny of the judges.

The invited judges were Vincent Kok (Chief Operating Officer, Creative Advances Technologies), Damanhuri Mahmood (Chief Financial Officer, Creative Advances Technologies), Ooi Woon Chee (Executive Director, KPMG), Bugs Tan (Co-founder of MACRI) and Neil Walter (Entrepreneur).

MIX also provides a platform for employers and employees to mingle and get to know each other at a more personal level. As CEO of MoneyTree Malaysia, Brandon Liew said, “We used to look into employees’ curricular vitae, check if they possess the skills and then determine whether we should hire the person but later, find out that the person whom does not have the “right personality” for the job. Instead, we should be hiring people with the right personality and train them for the skills.

“We want to change the process of employment through MIX. This is the platform where personalities and talents of youths shine in their very unique ways.

Not only do participants get to showcase their ideas and capabilities, they also got the chance to talk to potential employers and gain more knowledge from them during the event.

The event was hosted by Papi Zak, a rising comedian in the local scene. Everyone was entertained by how MIX was being compared with the American Idol and Malaysian Idol contests. MIX has proven that business and pleasure CAN MIX.

At the end of the MIX presentation session, Soo Jen Ric, a Taylor’s University College graduate was announced as the MIX 2 Prize Winner of the night and bagged the cash prize of RM1,500 with his interesting presentation.

In his presentation, he stressed that if travellers were given the flexibility to pick and choose activities of their liking and were given a myriad of choices to choose from, SOTA will be a hit amongst most travellers.

One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the lucky draw winner. The winner walked away with 2 passes to Universal Studios, Singapore, with a 2 day – 1 night hotel accommodation and 2 return tickets on board Odyssey’s Luxury Coach Liner.

MIX is a monthly event which also serves as a platform for organisations to identify TOP talents within Universities and Colleges.

The next session of MIX will be held on the 22 July and promises more excitement and fun.

Winners will compete at the 2010 International APICTA Awards

The MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards), jointly organised by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM), will once again showcase the best of Malaysia’s ICT at the 11th MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards.

Scheduled for early August 2010, this year’s award is themed “Stimulating Creativity and Excellence in ICT”.

MDec, the custodian of MSC Malaysia, aims to exceed last year’s all time high of 383 nominations.

In line with the Malaysia Innovative 2010 campaign spearheaded by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI), the MSC Malaysia APICTA 2010 awards will recognise ‘Innovation and Creativity’ amongst Malaysians. In addition, the award is a notable networking platform, fostering trade relations and business opportunities for investors.

Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer of MDeC notes that Malaysia has made strong strides towards becoming an innovation-led economy, especially in the past few years.

“We believe the MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards has contributed to this and we are proud to facilitate and contribute to the growth of ICT talents in the country. In increasing overall ICT awareness and interest, this has in turn encouraged and assisted young people to take up entrepreneurial career paths within ICT sectors. I look forward to recognising these talents and the significant contribution that they have made and will continue to make through locally developed innovative ICT applications. MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards will be a milestone event in the year of innovation and creativity of 2010!” Badlisham says.

According to BMI’s Malaysian IT Report Quarter 1 2010, Malaysia’s IT spending is expected to grow to around U$4.5bn in 2010, from US$4.2bn in 2009. The market has strong growth fundamentals, including low PC penetration, rising incomes and a high-tech-focused national development plan. Key sectors will include government, telecoms and finance – contributing extensively to projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12% over 2010-2014.

The nominees, comprising individuals, students, entrepreneurs, small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and organisations will have an opportunity to present their ICT products and services in any of the 18 categories mentioned in the MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards, ranging from Best of e-Learning and e-Health, to Financial Applications and Research & Development.

The nominees will be judged by a team of industry movers and shakers from the Government, academia and the ICT industry. Entries will be judged according to various criteria such as uniqueness, market potential, functionality or features, quality and application of technology.

The highlight of the MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards will be the awarding of the Prime Minister’s “Best of the Best” Award. One winner of any non-student categories will be selected among the finalists and the winner will walk away with this prestigious award recognition together with an opportunity to attend a week-long Entrepreneurship Development Programme at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

MDeC has spearheaded the annual MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards programme since 1999. Initially launched as the Asia Pacific MSC IT & Telecommunications Awards (APMITTA), the awards programme underwent several changes as it grew from strength to strength. It was eventually renamed MSC Malaysia APICTA after the introduction of the international Awards Programme APICTA in 2002, and the rebranding of MSC (Multimedia Super Corridor) to MSC Malaysia in 2006.

The winners and merit recipients will also be given the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the International Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (International APICTA Awards), competing alongside winners from member economies of the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance including Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The countries take turns in hosting the annual International Awards programme and are selected through a bidding process.

This year, the International APICTA Awards is set to return home, and the awards ceremony will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from the 11 – 15 October.

Submission must be completed via the online submissions form and nominations are now open from 24 March until 28 May 2010. Details of the nomination process can be found at www.mscmalaysia.my/apicta

Named Officier of the Legion d’ Honneur

AirAsia Group CEO Dato’ Sri Dr Tony Fernandes was conferred the title of Officier of the Legion d’ Honneur by the government of France for his outstanding contributions to the aviation industry. Dominique Bussereau, Secretary of State for Transport of France, conferred the title on Tony in a ceremony held in Paris and attended by some of the biggest names in European business.

Officier of the Legion d’ Honneur is the highest rank of honor that the government of France can award to a non-French citizen. The Legion d’ Honneur was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to recognise outstanding service to France.

AirAsia has contributed largely to the French and European economies by supporting the European-owned and Toulouse-based Airbus, an EADS company. AirAsia has placed firm orders of Airbus aircraft including 175 A320, 25 A330 and 10 A350 aircraft. AirAsia also has an option to purchase 50 more A320 and five more A350 aircraft.

AirAsia uses Airbus aircraft extensively for its flights. It has an all-Airbus fleet for its Malaysia-based operations. Its Thailand- and Indonesia-based operations will have all-Airbus fleets within this year.

AirAsia, which has hubs in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, has democratised travel in the ASEAN region. It connects all 10 ASEAN capitals and more cities with “sky bridges”, linking and benefiting countless communities. By promoting travel in the region through low fares, an extensive network of destinations and great flight frequencies, it has helped the region achieve economic growth.

Tony Fernandes co-founded AirAsia and has led the airline in its transformation from a loss-making Malaysian airline into the ASEAN airline that it is now. AirAsia, Asia’s leading and largest low-cost carrier, also connects the ASEAN region with China, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Australia. Through its low-cost long-haul affiliate AirAsia X, it connects the region with more destinations in Asia (China, Taiwan and soon India), Australia and Europe (through the United Kingdom).

Under the leadership of Fernandes, in only eight years, AirAsia grew its fleet from two aircraft to 92, its staff from 250 to 7,000, and its routes from one to more than 132. It has to date flown more than 85 million guests.

VIERA CAST to bring HDTV connectivity to a new level

Panasonic, a worldwide leader in High Definition technology and built-in TV web entertainment, and Skype, a leader in internet communications, announced a collaboration that will enable consumers to make voice and video calls over Skype™ on Panasonic’s line of 2010 VIERA CAST- enabled TVs planned for launch this year.

Part of the VIERA exhibition at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre

This collaboration takes Skype to another platform, in addition to the computer and the mobile phone, which is the technology heart of the home, the television. Skype on your VIERA® delivers many familiar Skype features including:

•	Free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls

•	Calls to landline or mobile phone at Skype’s low rates

•	The option to receive inbound calls via a user’s online Skype number

•	Skype voicemail, if you have it set up

•	Being invited to participate in voice conference calls with up to 24 other parties

“The addition of Skype to our VIERA CAST offerings truly takes TV connectivity to a whole new level,” said Jeff Lee, Managing Director Panasonic Malaysia. “VIERA CAST was created to offer Panasonic VIERA TV owners a new level of entertainment by giving them access to some of the most popular content-driven web sites. Panasonic VIERA TV owners can now not only share photos and videos online; with Skype they can also talk to family and friends from the comfort of their living room.”

Jeff Lee, incoming Managing Director of Panasonic Malaysia presenting his speech

“Skype has made video calling easy, free and accessible. Today, 34% of all Skype-to-Skype calls include video. The number one reason why Skype users enjoy video calling is because it makes them feel more connected to friends and family. TVs are a logical and natural platform for video communications. TVs will no longer be just the center of people’s entertainment experience, but have the potential to be the center of people’s communications experience.”

To conduct a Skype video call on a VIERA CAST TV, a specially-designed high-performance Panasonic camera, which is sold as a separate accessory, is simply plugged into the television. The camera includes a special microphone system that can easily pick up sound from couch-distance. Plus, it will deliver up to 720p high definition video quality depending on the consumer’s internet bandwidth.

Panasonic’s VIERA CAST feature has been widely acknowledged for its distinctive internet application, allowing the consumer to view targeted sites on a large TV, rather than a small computer screen. VIERA CAST requires no external box or PC. VIERA CAST is accessed via a single button on the television remote control and there is no fee to use the VIERA CAST functionality (some VIERA CAST services such as VOD have a separate fee structure).

Approved projects to be incubated

The MyIdeas web portal, launched on Feb 23 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has received more than 5,000 suggestions from the public. As a follow-up, Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) has been tasked to identify innovative ideas to be supported and incubated by the Foundation.

Speaking at the Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 event, Dr Raslan Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) said that the foundation is now in the process of identifying those ideas which can be incubated and executed.

“The portal was launched to promote creative thinking among Malaysians and since the Foundation is formed to promote innovation and creativity amongst Malaysians, we will help to support and incubate those projects with our partners,” he added.

Amongst partners that will be involved in this programme are Youth Works Asia, National Incubator Network Association, MAD Incubator and Technology Park Malaysia.

The Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) and Youth Works Asia (YWA) to create more grassroots youth innovation activation programmes for the year 2010.

Focusing on youth innovation as its major programme for 2010, the collaboration between YIM and YWA will see major developments in youth innovation programmes that will energise youth passions and creativity in grassroots innovation.

The collaboration will see both parties identifying youth projects submitted through the MyIdeas Portal and co-create these projects with the proposer to kickstart youth innovation and creativity under its Young Ideas Salon activities which will begin by May this year.

“We view youth engagement as a key to grassroot innovation as youth is the future of tomorrow’s Malaysia,” said Dr Raslan Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of YIM. “We need to understand our mobile youth generation and YIM Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 is the starting platform towards more youth activation activities to engage with our youth.

These youth activation activities will spark more grassroot social innovation among our young generation,” he added.

Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 is a project by Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia, MAD Incubator, SummerSands Group, Mobile Youth UK and Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd; and is the inaugural event that brings more than 200 mobile youth trendsetters (18-25), youth brands, corporate and government organisations together; and takes a good in-depth look on current youth insights and trends, what’s really going on in the youth community and how youth brands can effectively engage with the youth market.

This one-and-a-half-day Unconference touches on ground breaking youth media trends; how brands are working with youth to shape their product development; how brands leverage youth influencers in their marketing and why youth love/hate brands and which ones are in/out.

The key to marketing to the mobile youth generation is to develop innovative programmes on the mobile generation. The Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 is one such initiative to study the universe of young people in the mobile generation and then guide marketeers, product/service developers and government agencies to better develop and market products or services for these consumers.

YIM Mobile Youth Unconference Asia 2010 was held at Technology Park Malaysia (TPM), Bukit Jalil. Designed to further propel the nation into an innovation-based economy, TPM is the pioneer technology park in Malaysia aimed to increase the wealth of the community by promoting culture of innovation and competitiveness.

Also present were Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice President of Telenor Group, Head of Telenor Region Asia and Chairman of DiGi.com Bhd; Johan Dennelind, Chief Executive Officer of DiGi; and students from the six finalist teams.

A total of 15 teams from 8 Malaysian universities participated in the inaugural Challenge for Change programme, which kicked off in July 2009 with the aim to encourage undergraduates to rise to the challenge and be part of the green revolution.

Six teams were then selected for the final round where they undertook projects to design renewable energy solutions for rural, underserved communities in Malaysia.

An industry dialogue session titled “The Challenge for Climate Action: Is industry really serious?” was held in conjunction with the Challenge for Change finale event. The session was attended by representatives from the communications industry, government, civil society and youth.

Challenge for Change is aligned with DiGi’s Deep Green programme which addresses energy efficiency within the company’s business and broader areas of sustainability with related stakeholders. Deep Green includes key initiatives involving DiGi’s network, information technology (IT) systems, building and facilities, fleet and initiatives with employees, customers, partners and the community.

At the finale, Denelind said “Deep Green is a core business of DiGi and is our strategy to embed sustainable development into every aspect of our organisation. We have already invested RM40 million and are prepared to invest another RM60 million over the next two to three years.”

“Challenge for Change is one of many corporate responsibility programmes we have undertaken to address global issues that impact the environment. This programme is our way to give young Malaysians the opportunity to champion the climate change cause with their peers and the community, these enthusiastic young people are the future agents of change who will lead the charge on climate issues, and we at DiGi will continue to invest time and resources in them.”

WiMAX dubs 2010 as the year of devices.

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”), in a very rare occasion today unveiled its overall strategy for 2010; calling the year as the beginning of the WiMAX decade and the year of the devices. In the presentation, P1 which is the world’s leading 2.3Ghz 4G WiMAX operator announced that it will be launching a complement of WiMAX embedded devices starting with Malaysia’s first WiMAX embedded notebook developed by its parent company Green Packet Berhad, by the second half of the year.

“In 2009, we promised to bring into the market Malaysia’s first WiMAX embedded devices this year and we are keeping good to that promise. P1’s WiMAX embedded net book will be a game changer in the wireless broadband industry. It will be the key that opens the floodgate to a plethora of WiMAX embedded computers coming into Malaysia this year,” said Micheal Lai, Chief Executive Officer of P1.

This soon-to-be launched net book will be South East Asia’s first WiMAX computer and is key in preparing the Malaysian market for more WiMAX embedded computers coming into the market later this year.

In addition to the notebook, P1 aims to further strengthen it’s; leadership position by expanding the P1 W1MAX coverage to 45% of the Malaysian population, including East Malaysia in 2010. Currently, P1 remains a beacon of the 2.3 GHz WiMAX deployment in the world with the P1 W1MAX network. P1 is also the only WiMAX operator in South East Asia to be appointed into the WiMAX Forum Board of Directors.

“As a company with an open mind and open culture, we make it a point to share as much as we can with the media and the public. Today’s briefing is one such occasion, where we have the opportunity to share our progress, challenges and plans. We believe, the more we share, the better we can serve our subscribers,” Lai added.
