The largest company of its kind in the world, Les Ballets Grandiva boasts over 50 ballets in its repertoire and some of the best international male ballet dancers from around the world.  These handsome ballerinos have performed with renowned ballet companies including Russia’s Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets, New York City Ballet, Berlin State Opera Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, English National Ballet and Joffrey Ballet. “Men in Tutus” is the ultimate send-up of both classical and contemporary ballet, combining brilliant dancing technique, tongue-in-cheek humour, dancing mishaps and of course, hissy fits by men playing both male and female roles! Such is their popularity in Japan that bodyguards are required to protect them from the hordes of adoring female fans, who worship “men in makeup”.

It’s definitely ballet with a twist –with their improvised version of  the infamous ballet routine for “Swan Lake” and over the top exaggeration on ballerinas (or in this case, ballerinos) and their egos for wanting to get the most applause from the audience. Surprisingly enough, most of the ballerinos manage to look extremely feminine (if you put aside the fact that their masculinity was pretty much noticeable from the muscles in their arms and legs) and managed to carry of the female role in their performance flawlessly. I cannot stress enough about the humour of their performance and originality that was in this performance –but I can surely say that Les Ballets Grandiva has captured my heart and would be the perfect outing for the weekend to bring the family to.
