General information
L’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF – International Organisation of the French-speaking countries) comprises 56 members states and governments, and 14 observers. The primary mission of the organisation is the promotion of the French language as an international language and the promotion of worldwide culturaland linguistic diversity in the era of economic globalisation. There are 200 million French-speakers on the 5 continents.
French in Malaysia
French is the most popular European language in Malaysia after English. French is currently taught in 39 secondary schools (especially residential schools), universities, colleges, international schools and the Alliance Française of Kuala Lumpur and Penang. In total, more than 15,000 Malaysians are studying the French-language in these institutions. Its internationally recognised diploma, DELF, is a success in Malaysia with 2,000 secondary schools candidates for the Scolaire Session (DELF for schools).
Celebrated every year worldwide, the French-language week in Malaysia (Semaine de la langue française et de la francophonie) has been a success thanks to the commitment of23 different diplomatic missions represented in Kuala Lumpur as members of the International Organisation of the Francophonie: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Cambodia, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Ghana, Guinea, Laos, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritius, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Slovakia, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam.
Organisations associated to the project in Malaysia are: Alliance Française of Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Association Museum Volunteers Malaysia hosted by Muzium Negara Kuala Lumpur, Association des Francophones en Malaisie (Association of French-speakers in Malaysia, AFM)
The French-language week is organised with the aim to promote the various French-speaking countries represented in Malaysia as well as the French language. It also intends to provide moral support and encouragement to Malaysians speaking or studying the language, providing them opportunities to practise the language and to preserve its cultural and linguistic diversity.
