Between Nov 20 and Nov 21, No Black Tie will host three stellar performances by Southeast Asia’s greatest jazz legends, The Soliano family, Salamiah Hassan and Margie Segers.
The Solianos, Malaysia’s “first family of jazz” are scheduled to perform once again on Friday at No Black Tie, following two fanfared shows. Previously a staple at the club with their regular appearances, the Solianos comprising; Irene and Tricia D’Cruz on vocals, Tristano on piano, Valentino on bass, and Rizal on drums recently reunited for a special show during No Black Tie’s 11th anniversary week and on Nov 10.
With their tightly booked calendar and schedule to play at venues all over the region, No Black Tie’s proprietor Evelyn Hii says the Solianos show will be “another rare opportunity for KL city dwellers to be reacquainted with this prodigious family.”
It has been said that a family that eats together stays together. For the Solianos whose primary bond is music, playing together is also a reminder of the gift that runs in the family and of the musical lineage that traces back to their late father (D’Cruz’s grandfather) Alfonso Soliano, who is widely regarded as the grandfather of Malaysian jazz. The Solianos’ brand of music is sure to capture the imagination of all jazz lovers.
On Saturday and Sunday, Malaysia’s Salamiah Hassan and Indonesia’s Margie Segers will share the stage at No Black Tie for two nights of explosive performances.
Malaysians will have a rare opportunity to experience this combination of two vocal powerhouses deliver a repertoire of jazz standards and timeless classics.
Hii says: “This is going to be a very compelling and evocative show. Salamiah and Margie share some commonality; both women made their debut in the 1970s, have incredible voices and that endearing star quality that has made them the worthy legends that they are today.”
“We are humbled that Salamiah and Margie have agreed to perform together at No Black Tie,” she said.
Salamiah emerged in the 1970s and became a singing sensation with her outstanding voice and charisma. Hits such as Gelombang, Menghitung Hari and Surat Terakhir soon received frequent airplay. With her petite frame and big voice, Salamiah soon earned herself the moniker, “Little Miss Dynamite.”
Her repertoire of songs ranging from jazz to R&B never fails to astound the audience each time she takes the stage. Indeed few can match her vocal prowess and she remains the standard by which the new generation of female vocalists compare themselves.
Meanwhile, watching jazz vocalist Margie Segers take the stage is to share an intimate experience with one of Indonesia’s living legends. Segers is widely acknowledged as the singer, who in the ’70s started the jazz trend in Indonesia. And there is no wonder why the recording artiste has become more than a household name. Simply said, Segers is synonymous with jazz.
Those with an ear for jazz have compared Segers with Eva Cassidy and Dinah Washington. But if truth be told, Seger’s style is hers alone. Her original compositions and interpretations of familiar pop songs or dynamic jazz tunes has enraptured jazz lovers across generations. Lucky for us here this side of the Straits, Segers is set to perform in No Black Tie and reinvigorate our love for jazz.
