No Black Tie Celebrates 11th Birthday

No Black Tie (NBT) will celebrate its 11th Anniversary with an entire week of nightly performances, featuring some of the best names in Jazz and emerging must-know artistes — all of whom have contributed to Kuala Lumpur’s burgeoning live music scene.

The week begins on Oct 26 with one of NBT’s favourite performers, Yudi with her intoxicating rendition of Shanghai Jazz. To top off the night, Malaysia’s most well-known musical family in several decades, the Solianos will grace the stage for a truly memorable performance.

MJazz Trio is next on Oct 27, led by jazz pianist Dato Mokhzani Ismail. Sharing the bill with MJAZZ Trio is none other than the Salvador Guerzo Jazz Combo.

The Solianos and the Guerzos may be tough acts to follow, but the artistes performing on oct 28 will certainly hold their own. NBT paves the way for Jazz’s sassy, soulful songbird Najwa, who will croon tunes that will warm the neo soul, and Malaysian Idol finalist Sufiah Noor, who will wow the audience with her powerful vocals.

On Oct 29, mother-daughter duo Atilia and Salamiah Hassan will surely charm their devoted fans with their wit and captivate the hearts of all jazz lovers, while illustrating just how Jazz spans the generations.

The Rachel Guerzo trio, headlined by the eponymous jazz darling, will take on Oct 30 stage. Rachel will captivate her audience with her natural gift of song, from the most discerning jazz lover to first time listeners. She will be followed by Michael Veerapen Trio, bringing the audience to a NBT-guaranteed mind-blowing show.

True to NBT’s ethos of supporting and encouraging collaboration between Malaysian musicians and international artistes, NBT anniversary week’s grand finale on Oct 31 will feature the Samba & Batucada Ensemble with Xiong (guitar & voice), percussionists Alwyn, Toninho & Justin, special guest Steve Thornton (perc) and Valtinho Anastacio. This will culminate in the band Forest Earth, comprising Tay Cher Siang (piano), Norazmi Hairudin (sax), Wan Azfarezal (bass), Lewis Pragasam (drums) and Valtinho Anastacio (perc & voice)
