20th December has always been a landmark date for the Royal Selangor Club as it was on this exact day in 1970, that the Club most well-known among its members as “The Dog” was burned to the ground and from the ashes the Club was restored to its former glory, like what we see today.
Come this Sunday, December 20th 2009, the club will be celebrating its 125th anniversary of establishment since 1884; as well as the 25th anniversary of its Royal Patronage, which was bestowed on the Club by the Sultan of Selangor, father of the present day’s revered Patron. To mark the memorable event, and for the first time ever, the Royal Selangor Club will be issuing its special commemorative postage stamp and the publishing of the Club in the form of a coffee table book. Both the special collectible stamps and coffee book will be launched by the Royal Patron at the special dinner in the evening.
Also making an appearance at the dinner is Malaysia’s internationally acclaimed concert pianist, Bobby Chen, who was flown in especially from London to play for the Sultan and the Members. “I am very happy to be able to come back and perform for the Sultan. It’s really a great honour and I’m already looking forward to it. Hopefully I can make the Sultan a happy person,” said the talented Bobby during the official press conference held at the Royal Selangor Club.
To recognise the strong links that exists between the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the Royal Malaysian Police and the Club, there will be many unique displays of world renowned band from the PDRM, motorcycle and equestrian as well as the eye-opening Vintage Cars parade and representatives of the 22 sports section of the Club.
“The events on Sunday will truly endorse our proud and lasting relationship with the KL City Hall and PDRM, which we have had since 1884, when the Dataran Merdeka was simply known as the Parade Ground, where the police of those days carried our their training,” said Royal Selangor Club’s President Dato’ Dr Lim Teong Wah.
While the dinner in the evening is restricted to Members and their guests only, the majority public as well as international tourists and visitors to Kuala Lumpur are welcome to the spectacular display of performances at the Dataran Merdeka on Sunday (20th December 2009) at 3pm and be the witness to the unique display by these organisations who are truly a part of the Nation’s history.
