With the ASEAN common market taking shape, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners in Malaysia will have the opportunity to synergize with its ASEAN neighbours to develop the region’s traditional medicine market at the inaugural Traditional Medicine Expo (TMExpo 2009). Taking place at Suntec City International Convention Centre in Singapore from December 4-6, 2009, the event will bring together all key players in traditional and holistic medicine from across the region and around the world.
The global demand for Traditional Medicine has been growing as it is increasingly perceived as a natural and holistic alternative to Western pharmaceuticals. The export of Traditional Medicine from China to ASEAN and Asia increased by more than 150% and 80% respectively between 2004 and 2008.
Representing the Malaysian herbal business sector at this prestigious event will be Mr Loh Yang Hui, President of the Malaysian Council for Traditional Medicine Industries (MCTMI) who has been invited to provide insights on the Traditional Chinese Medicine arena in Malaysia at the TMExpo 2009 Conference. In addition, Mdm Noor’ain Bt. Shamsuddin, Assistant Director, National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau, Ministry of Health, Malaysia, will also be sharing insights on the regulation of traditional medicine products in Malaysia in her presentation “Ensuring Quality and Safety of Traditional Medicine in Malaysia.
The Ministry of Health Malaysia is currently pushing to integrate traditional and complementary medicine into the Malaysian healthcare system and to enhance co-operation with other member countries in this arena.. The Ministry is also focusing efforts on ensuring the quality and safe use of TCM practices and products to attain optimal potential in healthcare delivery. With these developments, the outlook for the industry is indeed promising.
Mr. Lee Tiong Sa, Chairman of STOC and Secretary-General of the ASEAN Alliance of Traditional Medicine Industries, revealed, “The organization of TMExpo 2009 is very timely as the governments of the various ASEAN countries work towards the establishment of an ASEAN common market, and to harmonize the regulatory system for Traditional Medicine and Health Supplements for the region by 2015. The event will also facilitate further growth in the TM sector by providing a platform for TM players from the region to network and keep abreast of the latest research data as well as government regulatory policies relating to traditional medicine.”
Dato Dr Pa Nok Ching, CEO of Jin Bin Corporation Sdn Bhd, one of the exhibitors, said, “As the up and coming regional Traditional Medicine hub in Asia, we feel that Singapore is the perfect location to introduce our company and products to a regional audience. We are also hoping to identify potential working partners and overseas business prospects.”
Trade visitors looking to gain a deeper understanding of the latest developments and regulatory systems for traditional medicine in the region will benefit immensely from the one-and-a-half-day TMExpo 2009 Conference, which features authoritative speakers and academics from national health organizations, traditional medicine associations and prestigious educational institutions. The conference is expected to attract between 200-250 business practitioners from around the world.
Jointly organized by the Singapore Traditional Chinese Medicine Organizations Committee (STOC) and the Singapore Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) College, this exciting expo will provide a platform for TM organizations from the region to showcase the latest in patent medicine, raw herbs, herbal extracts, health supplements, health care and therapy, as well as equipment and related services, and to exchange insightful information pertaining to the development of traditional medicine.
In addition to local participants, exhibitors from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Switzerland and the U.S will also be participating in the event.
TMExpo 2009 is supported by International Enterprise Singapore, the Ministry of Health of Singapore, SPRING Singapore, and Singapore Tourism Board.
