The PJ Challenge 2009 – Bloggers Karnival this year will take place on 20 June 2009. Its press conference, revealing details of the Karnival, was held on 5 June 2009, in conjunction with World Environment Day.
The organisers of the Karnival, Association of Backpackers Malaysia (ABM), was formed in 1991, by enthusiastic mountain climbers from all walks of life. They redefined the concept of backpacking, evolving an inexpensive way to travel across countries by mountain climbing, caving, camping, rock climbing, mountain biking, and aquatic adventure.
In 1994, they also sent a team of 78 women up to Gunung Tahan, forming the Gunung Tahan All Women’s Team. For every following year, a different and innovative concept was conceived. In 2004, the participants were required to ‘Climb 4 Hills in 1 Day’, in which they had to scale Bukit Sg Rumput, Bukit Kota Damansara, Bukit Lanjan, and Bukit Gasing, all in Petaling Jaya (PJ). Then the next year, they added to this routine, Road Relays, and taking the LRT. From 2004 onwards, the yearly challenges evolved to become more of an ‘Environment Audit Adventure’ called the ‘PJ Challenges’.
2009’s PJ Challenge intends to shift one step further, by moving with the times. The ABM believes that in PJ where the literacy level is high, the idea of Sustainable Development needs to be broadcast more widely through the use of new media, i.e. blogging.
Hence the intention of this year’s Karnival to teach more people how to blog. The organisers aim at two age groups, namely those from ages 8 to 18, and those above 55 years. There will be two sessions for bloggers – Blog 101 for Basic learners, and Blog 411 for Advanced learners. Speakers such as Kenny Sia will be guiding the learners on how to develop their blogging skills. Kaspersky lab is also sponsoring various family and community oriented contests, such as Treasure Hunt, Find Your Match, and a photography contest.
