On the surface, “Couples Retreat” looks just like your ordinary comedy, which involves romance and relationship. At best it could be entertaining for many, but at worst this is the kind of movie that you might not want to spend your time on. However, what is there to complain when you have great casts like Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and a few others more, right?

The fact that the trailers look pretty promising and solid, I found myself already looking forward to it. So, did it live up to my expectations? Yes and No. It isn’t a complete waste of time, really, but let’s just say that some “interesting” parts are missing from our big screen.

Vince Vaughn is pretty much “the” actor that you should look out for, especially in comedy. Whenever Vaughn is on screen, he possesses some sort of aura that is best for comedic business. Having said that, it means whenever his character opens his mouth, expect a squirt or two of happy tears squeezing out from your eyes. Yes, be prepared to laugh. Most of the time, “Couples Retreat” is driven by its dialogue. Though sometimes things need to get, well, “physical” it’s all happen in a good way. You might not feel as comfortable as always, but all that will put you into a laugh-out-loud position. Carlos Ponce, who played Antonio, in “Just My Luck” (2006) is simply brilliant. In “Couples Retreat” he plays Salvodore, the Yoga instructor. Whenever he’s on screen, he literally steals all the screen-time away from all his other co-stars.

It’s just a funny movie most of the time. Nothing is play out of proportion.

On the other hand, I find these sorts of movies are best to play within their safe limit. Nothing too much at one go, but at the same time feels engaging for the audiences. There are several moments in the film, where it tries to venture deeper into tackling issues involving marriage and relationship problems, but in the end, it comes off as being odd and silly, especially if its deliver using barefaced comedy.

Like most comedies, everything happens too fast and too “conveniently.” The movie spends almost 2/3 of its entire runtime building up characters, and fabricating complicate issues only to wrap up entirely in the last ten minutes. It feels cheap. It feels as though the filmmakers have nothing else to put in and quickly wraps up the whole reel, calling it a job “well done.”

Overall, “Couples Retreat” is a funny movie to watch. A movie that starts off quite promising in the beginning, but leaving you a stinky feeling that the filmmakers do not know how to end it, thus the rather dissatisfying ending. Still, there are enough laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of smiles in the movie that it’s worth paying a visit.

It is important to take care to look after your hearing, I actually like taking care hearing and whilst I do agree with the higher up poster and I really hope I do not get shot down for stating this, but I believe it is important to take all things in moderation.
