We call up Rachel Darshini Henry, one of R Records’ budding young artistes (she is only 18) who has just recently released a single called ‘She Waits’, about a girl who is waiting for someone to come understand her. ‘She Waits’ is also featured as Voize’s Single of the Week.

Tell us how you started out in music?
My parents gave us music lessons, and I learnt piano at 5, which was my first real taste of music. In primary school (Sayfol International) I discovered my passion for singing when I was asked to perform. At 9 I started singing.
Did you write the song She Waits all by yourself?
Yes, I wrote the music and the lyrics, with the arrangement being a collaboration with R Records. Currently I have only released this as a single, as I have just only moved back here to experience music, singing, and acting last year. Before this I completed my high schooling in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia.
Do you have plans to release an album?
Every musician hopes to one day. Currently I’m doing a bit of acting, with Klpac’s Theatre For Young People, which lasts over the course of 6 months. I just finished my second play on Sunday. So its a lot of Klpac…
So Klpac is kind of like second home, isn’t it?
Haha, yeah.
What musicians inspire you?
Bat For Lashes, an alternative band from the UK…I listen to tons of music – Imogen Heap, Jem, Radiohead, Bjork, Kate Bush.
Tell us the story behind ‘She Waits’.
Its a melancholic song about a girl that is waiting for someone to come along and understand her. She doesn’t want to leave the stage – its a stationary point until someone comes along, that understands her.
People make the connection with you and Deborah Henry, your sister. How do you feel about it?
Well, I don’t view it as competition. Being her sister has helped a lot in getting to where I am, so I am grateful to her.
How many siblings do you have?
Two older sisters and one younger brother.
