Elvis Costello’s Secret, Profane & Sugarcane (Universal Music)
Review by Gavaskar Brian Raj

Many would recognize the multi-genre recording artist in his, shall we say comfort zone, which is classic country music. Elvis Costello, not to be mistaken for the “King”, has carved a name for himself when it comes to doing music. He has created albums in many genres and can be considered somewhat of a experimentalist.

On a more recent note, he has released his latest album titled ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane’, under the Universal Music Group. This album no doubt showcases a more polished side to his personality of music. The songs featured on this album is mostly acoustic which is in contrast with his previous works. Watching “MTV” the other day, I saw the band “U2” as being the latest featured artist. Owing to the fact that they are Irish, it got me thinking that Costello is not American-born (he’s British), but yet he has given the world a fresh perspective on America just like “U2” has done.

Most of the tracks on this album are written or co-written by him, so I think just enough of Costello is imprinted on each of the tracks. We have come to recognize that trademark oversized black glasses, worn typically by Costello, which could have been included on his album cover design. On this album, he brought together musicians playing the fiddle, mandolin and dobro – which leaves one with a unique musical experience. As I mentioned before, he co-wrote most of the songs, which brings up the question – Are any of the lyrics based on something or someone out of Costello’s life or himself even?  Highlights of the album like “Sulphur to Sugarcane” talks about a gigolo’s journey in the course of his work and life. Gets you thinking, well at least it gets me thinking.

Costello seems to appeal to the older generation, but do not be fooled – apparently, he was featured on Fall Out Boy’s 2008 album, lending them his vocal talent. This album will give rise to mixed feelings and conflicting opinions from the public for sure. On the whole, I think that this album is a must-listen for you guys to judge.
