Ze! started gigging 10 years ago, as a rapper in an all-girl RnB group who have always idolised the female rapper called Left Eye from the female hip hop trio, TLC. After the group disbanded, she went solo and experimented with different genres of music and was looking for THE sound that would fit her. It wasn’t until she met her current producer, Ruben Debusschere, that she discovered dance music about 4 or 5 years ago. Ze’s new songs “I AM GLAM” and “CANDY” has just been picked up by MTV for their new show STYL’D – which first episode had just been premiered last Sunday! Her talented sister has also just won 3rd place at a DJ mixing championship. Need to know more about this spunky and talented individual? Then continue on reading the exclusive VOIZE interview with Ze!.
1.     Who do you think your fans are?
I think my fans are people who love pop music but don’t like the clichĂ©s that go with it. They understand what it feels like to be an outcast and like that someone’s telling them that being different kicks ass.
2.     Who are your musical influences?
Madonna, Roisin Murphy, Nelly Furtado and I’d be lying not to mention KRU because I’ve been following their every step since I was 12.
3.     How do you describe your music to people especially to those who have never heard of “Ze!”?
I’d say I sound like an angry b**** but if they look like they listen to Hitz or Fly all day then I’ll watch my mouth and say “oh you know, something like Lady Gaga”.
4.     What image do you think your music conveys?
I think my music is about being rebellious, somewhat careless, being bold and having lotsa fun!
5.     So, if you could recommend one song, what would it be?
Do you mean one of my songs? Then I AM GLAM, of course. If you meant other songs, then JUMP by Madonna. I love that video and I love love love the song. It gives me motivation when I feel like shit, I workout to it all the time and it gets me all fired up! Roar!
6.     So, tell us a little bit about the whole Beyonce fiasco.
Haha! I came home one night to 400 friend requests on my Facebook with absolutely no clue what the hell was going on until someone sent me the link. I guess the only thing that made me cringe was because I have nothing against Beyonce because she is, as we all know, miss perfect. I would’ve had a completely different reaction if it had been about someone I really don’t like, like Kimora Lee for example. Sorry, but I can’t stand the sight of her. So, it was partly a joke and partly not cause I really don’t need a happily married woman telling me how to put my hands up. I did get some crazy hate mails from her fans that started comparing my ass to hers, which obviously is not even a competition. How the hell do I even compete with all that junk inside that trunk? But hey, I actually gained some excited new fans so I thank whoever that mole is on my Facebook account.
7.     If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say to them?
I really wanna meet Madonna, but I think I’ll just be so star struck and say nothing. But if I do eventually find my voice, I’ll probably ask her if she wants to adopt me.
8.     What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Wow, if I told you that I will have to kill you.
9.  You’ve been nominated in the AVIMA 2009 for Best Dance/Electronica Song; I am Glam, any plans to participate in the VIMA 2010 or the next AVIMA?
Yes of course! I already told Siva I’m coming to the ‘indiecent’ awards in Madonna pointed boobs. Be prepared.
10.  If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you?
A bikini, an umbrella and doraemon.
11.  List down 5 ways you could use a disco ball for:
1) As a chair
2) As a spare tyre
3) As a mirror
4) To make an eclipse
5) To throw at boys who dare say NO to me.
12Â Â What can we expect from you in the future?
In the near future, my album release early 2010 (I’m very excited!) and in 5 years I’ll be married to a famous footballer. Pfft!
