The ‘1Malaysia Captured’ initiative was launched on 14 November 2009, offering a total prize of RM 100 000 and to provide cures for up to 50 cataract patients in Malaysia.
Organised by Grassroot People Sdn Bhd, the initiative is part competition and part social activism.
Both professional and amateur photographers from all over Malaysia have the chance to submit their own creative visual representations of Malaysia – called ‘1Malaysia Moments’.
There are three categories – namely professional, amateur, and mobile, where the latter is supported by a special mobile platform for MMS pictures, created by LTT Global.
Each person is allowed to submit up to 5 images in their chosen category, in its original form without software editing or manipulation.
Every 200th registration on the 1Malaysia Captured website (www.1malaysiacaptured.com) will enable one visually impaired Malaysian to be selected for a cataract correction procedure.

The launch was officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, in IACT Jaya One.
“The objective of supporting the mobile platform for the 1Malaysia Captured contest is because we are the mobile catalyst for Global Entrepreneurship Week, which takes place from 16 to 22 Nov,” says Rani Wemel, Director of LTT Global.
“Any moment that represents 1Malaysia, any kind of subject,” is what Tim Fernandez, COO of Grassroot People, says in regard to the subject matter.
“Today’s launch is really about seeing beyond diversity, to reach oneness. We hope the competition can be used as a beginning to achieve this vision,” he said further.
Onny Maathai, CEO of Grassroot People, who oversees the implementation of projects, said: “We are the people from the grassroots, and would like to see unity among us from the start. We have looked forward to today’s launch for many months, to make 1Malaysia a reality from grassroots.”
“My concept of 1Malaysia, is where a Chinese, Indian, Malay, or any race come together to have tea, to sit down and do things together, to not fear the other races but to look at each other as humans and make things work because we are one.”
